What inspired you to write both Between Shades of Grey and Salt to Sea? And why did you decide to link them together? I found it really cool and I can't wait for anothe one of your books to come out!

(view spoiler)[Hello Evelyn!
I was inspired to write "Between Shades of Gray" and "Salt to the Sea" because they felt like hidden pieces of history. I wanted to give voice to those who would never have a chance to tell their story. I also had a family connection to both time periods and that led me to explore it in the first place. I linked the two stories together via Joana and Lina, hoping that readers might recognize the connection. I'm so glad you did! Thanks so much! (hide spoiler)]

Hi Ruta, I love your books. In the very popular genre of Holocaust books, yours have stood out to me. I would like to know how you are able to 'get in your characrter's heads' so well? They all seem so unique and well written. And if you wouldn't mind, could you just say hi to the kids in my book club? I'm a YA librarian and would love to show them that they could connect with a favorite author if they try! Thanks!

As a lover of young adult and historical fiction, you are one of my 'must-read-everything-they-write' authors. In a couple of months you are coming to my school to participate in our big read and I couldn't be happier about it. My question is: Do decide on your historical timeframe first and then look for the narrative or do you envision the character and decide where is history they best fit?

Hi Ruta! Sadly, I only read one of your books. However, I really liked how you showed things up. It's really well written and characters are strong, believable. I really like that. By the way, I'm from Lithuania and I wanted to ask, maybe you plan to visit our little country anytime soon? Best wishes from Kaunas :)
