Ruta Sepetys Hello Anthea!

I'm so thrilled that you read the Croatian edition of the book!

Unfortunately, people who were deported to Siberia were considered criminals by the Soviet regime. If they survived Siberia and returned to Lithuania their rights were restricted. They weren't allowed an education, they weren't allowed to rent an apartment, etc. So sadly, Lina would probably not have been able to go to college. In terms of her art, she would have to keep her work secret, as the Soviet regime mainly allowed art in the style of Soviet Realism and Lina's art was more abstract.

Thanks for asking!
