Hey. Ms. Ruta!! How are you? Between Shades of Gray can be a pretty heavy book to read sometimes, because of what the characters are going through and what might happen to them next. I had to stop reading just to gather my thoughts. Is it difficult for you to write about such sensitive subjects? Does it ever take its toll on you? Lots of love. Looking forward to reading Salt To The Sea!! You're AMAZING!!! :)

Hello Rohit!
Thank you for this question. Yes, sometimes the sadness of the tragedy overwhelms me and leaks into my heart. Instead of trying to run away from it, I try to stay present within it so I can transfer that sense of emotion into the writing. That way, hopefully the readers will feel a sense of emotional truth while reading.
And thanks for your kind words. YOU'RE amazing! :)

(Part 2: I understand completely if these can't be answered.) -Did you know from the beginning of the book if Josie was going to be Patrick or Jesse? -Do you have a favorite poem or poet (like Keats), or are you much like I am with books, you can't narrow it down to just that one. -Favorite novel when you were Josie's age? Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

HI RUTA . I love your books , I have read all of them . I love historical Fiction . I have a Polish and Ukrainian Background . My grandmother and grandfather had to leave their homeland which was Ukraine and Poland. My grandmother was from Lviv and i enjoyed seeing that in Salt and the sea. My question is what is your cultural background and why did you decide to write about that time period ?

Hi Ruta! I have read Between Shades of Gray recently and I absolutely enjoyed it. I look forward to reading your other two books soon. They probably are just as good! I was wondering: Will your future books be focused around other historical events/concepts? If so, what are they or what do you hope they will be?
