Hi Ruta! I read your book, “Between Shades of Gray” when I was a little tot', and I just wanted to know, why the holocaust? What inspired your decision to write about this event? Does it have some sort of relevance to you or your family? Thank you for your coming response, Liz. :)

Hi Elizabeth!
Yes, "Between Shades of Gray" was based on the experience of my father's extended family who was deported to Siberia. Much of the world is not aware that Stalin deported so many people to Siberia. I wanted to write "Between Shades of Gray" to create an awareness of the history and also give voice to the people who never had a chance to tell their story. Thanks for asking!

I have read all three of your books and absolutely love them! I am currently in high school and am interested in possibly writing plays and musicals when I'm older. Out of curiosity, what do you think about a stage adaptation of any of your books? I can't wait for Ashes in the Snow to come out! Thank you for being such an inspiration to me!

I believe that some of your inspiration for the story came from a relative, besides the path of his journey, were there any other pieces of "Between Shades of Grey" that mirrored their life during the Holocaust? Also, Have you ever thought about Lina's, Andrius's, and the other character's future after the story ends? I'm not asking for a sequel, but what're your thoughts on what happens following the epilogue?

Hi Ruta, I am a 7th grader and I had a question for you. It has always been an interest of mine to have a little back story to authors loves so what did you want to be before becoming a writer and what age did you write a book that was more than at least 100 pages? My teacher and all my favorite authors inspire me and I have written a story that at least 130 pages and those are my reasons behind my questions.
