Hi Ruta! I first read "Out of the Easy" when my friend made me promise I would read it because she enjoyed it so much. After reading it I checked out "Between Shades of Gray" and could not put it down. I was absolutely taken by your writing and by Lina. I'm not sure I can put into words how much I liked it! Not going to lie, I cried for hours after finishing it. Did you always know you wanted a career as an author?

Yes, I always wanted to be an author and started writing stories as a very young girl. But after a "rough review" in 3rd grade I lost my courage and didn't write for many years. I'm so grateful I gave it another shot. Whew! :)

As a middle school English teacher, Between Shades of Gray is one of my top recommendations for students who think they know WWII books. When I saw Salt to the Sea in the library, I snatched it immediately and am finding it hard to put down. I was surprised, though, to see another World War II book from you. Did the research for one lead to the idea for the other?
