River asked Eve Silver:

What advice would you give someone wanting to be an author?

Eve Silver Read. Read. Read. Read as many genres as you can and try to determine what elements of the story work for you.

Write. Write. Write. The more you write, the better. If a novel feels too large and daunting, start with a short story.

Search out a writing course. There are often writing courses offered as part of continuing education programs. For example, University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies offers some great writing courses (I teach there).

Search out local writing groups. For example, Toronto Romance Writers is a fantastic group that offers monthly workshops, critique sessions, a newsletter and support to writers. Depending on what you write, you can also check out SCBWI or Sisters in Crime or SFWA, etc.

Write on!
