Amy
Amy asked Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney:

I loved the character of Stephanie and how you used her as a foil for the Plumbs. I also like that she played against the stereotype, particularly where Leo is concerned. Did you intend for her to represent the reader in some fashion, perhaps in the way that we like Leo in spite of ourselves?

Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney I love Stephanie, too! The only intent I had when writing the book--other than writing a good story--was to paint a true and authentic New York City. So when I thought of Stephanie, I thought of many of the women I knew in New York who were strong, single, and had outgrown the lure of the dangerous, narcissistic men most of us encounter at some point in life. Stephanie isn't completely immune to Leo, but she's a grown-up and (mostly) acts like one.
