Jewel E. Ann How do I not see these Q's until they've been here forever? Sorry ... So, Jillian felt that Jessica was dead. She believed that life was gone forever. That's how she had to think to survive, both physically and emotionally. So yes, it was a way to survive and distract from an empty existence. However, our capacity to love goes beyond what most of us think is even possible. Her feelings for AJ were real and "Jillian" loved AJ as much as "Jessica" loved Luke. To accept the events of this story, the reader much be like Jack & Jill and accept the duality of their lives. Hope this makes sense.
