(view spoiler)[Hi Ruta! I have just read "Between Shades of Gray" and it is now my favorite book of all time! I was about to go visit you at the SE-YA Book Fest in TN, but I couldn't because my school cancelled our trip due to the weather. I wanted to ask you this: I have read the excerpt from "Salt to the Sea" from my copy, and I'm wondering, is Joana from your new book really Lina's cousin, inspired by her, or a new character? Hi Kester!
So happy that you enjoyed "Between Shades of Gray" and sorry I missed you at SE-YA. In terms of your question - yes, Joana in "Salt to the Sea" is really Lina's cousin!

I loved Out of the Easy but it was hard for me to read Between Shades of Grey and especially Salt to the Sea because... I am Russian. As much as I hate the committed atrocities, I remain patriotic and wish you depicted the great sufferings the Russian nation had to endure during the war. No one likes to be a bad guy. Is this something you might consider for a book in the future? Thank you, Olya Coffin

Hello, I am a great fan of yours, and I am looking to read Salt to the Sea, and have finished Between Shades of Grey. I was wondering, why did you choose historical topics to write about? Also, if you had to choose another genre, what genre would you write in? Do you think you would be good in it?

Hi Ruta! I finished "Salt to the Sea" this weekend and I don't know if I'll ever recover from it. The characters will stuck with me forever. I have to ask: Did Florian meet his sister again? And Joana? Did she found her mother? Also, I was reading some reviews on internet, and I was a little shocked that some people think of Albert as a villain. For me, he was just naïve and a victim too. What do you think about him?
