Honestly, I don't know that I follow any "techniques." I just trust the characters to lead the story the most natural, believable way. I know what they want and need so clearly that I let it guide me. When I draft, I mostly dream up sort of huge plot thing and then ask myself, "okay, so what are the characters going to do about it." The answer I come up with is what becomes the book.
