Goodreads asked Dylan Madeley:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Dylan Madeley Struggling to write my first NaNoWriMo length manuscript as early as 2006, I had two different story ideas that I couldn't carry past a few pages in Word. I didn't really have a feel for the prose either, so that it was mostly a page of descriptive narrative without dialogue, but that was a different problem to be worked out over time.

I decided that in each case, I was focusing on the variable character, the mysterious one that needs to be met by the other. I had essentially been trying to write Derek's story as a stand-alone, then abandoning that and trying to write Chandra's. When I made it both their story, I was not only able to get it to length, but also to answer the questions in each stand-alone that originally had me stumped.
