The first chapter of The Harder They Come reads as a stand alone short story. Was it originally written for that format?

Good observation, Alice. The answer is no, though it was published as a story in Harper's last spring. All my novels are organic and must proceed from the first seed. Another set piece you might wonder about is the opening of When the Killing's Done, which was published as a long story, but was just the opening of a much bigger narrative.

I'm curious about your process because you excel at both novels and short stories. When coming up with ideas for your work, do you immediately know if it's a novel or a story? Or do you just write until the work figures out on its own what it wants to be? With that asked, do you have a personal short story that you think could be retold as a full-length novel?
