I'm curious about your process because you excel at both novels and short stories. When coming up with ideas for your work, do you immediately know if it's a novel or a story? Or do you just write until the work figures out on its own what it wants to be? With that asked, do you have a personal short story that you think could be retold as a full-length novel?

Yes, Aaron: stories and novels are discrete. I have never had the experience of expanding a story to novel length or shrinking a novel down to a story. I set out, quite purposely, to write one or the other. Right now, in the wake of finishing "The Terranauts," I am writing new stories.

I was curious as to your observations (if any) to changes in your neighborhood since Harry & Meghan invaded---I mean 'moved' into the area? I equate their presence to 'invasive carp' - fish that are causing their own brand of trouble by altering natural ecosystems.

I love your books, from World's End to San Miguel, and I am wondering how you find your characters? Do you construct their attributes and motivations before starting to write or do they evolve as you work through the narrative? Forgive me for asking, but you don't seem to like many of your characters, and I am wondering if they evolve in a way that surprises you?
