Bob asked Mark Lawrence:

I perceive your writing to be better each book you put out. Have you learned new tricks and work to implement them or it is more like general competence gained through experience?

Mark Lawrence Since I continually see one person's perception diametrically opposed to the next person's, I place very little stock in any given example.

Writers often get better with time, and they often get worse, or change their style which can be taken as either improvement or deterioration depending on a particular reader's tastes.

I'm not aware of any tricks learned. That's not to say they're aren't any. A writer is no more reliable when it comes to analysing their own performance than any reader is.

I am, of course, glad that you're one of those who think I'm getting better. It's surely a happier state of affairs than having you think I'm getting worse. Then again it's not hard to find readers who feel that Prince of Thorns was my best book.
