I've appreciated the way that your character has grown throughout the series. There is one characteristic/gift of Maisie's that I noticed you decided to allow to quietly drop out of the storylines--communication with dead spirits. I think it was a good choice, but I'm curious--why did you have this as part of the character in early novels? What prompted the change?

Maisie did not communicate with dead spirits as such - she is very much a "sensitive" who has an awareness of the veil between worlds (one way to put it). I did not consciously "drop" that idea, but if I do not include a given trait for any of the characters, it's because it just didn't fit whilst I was writing, therefore it didn't come up. No big decisions were employed.

I've read all your Maisie books and have really enjoyed them -- especially "Journey to Munich". I am an aspiring mystery writer myself and would love to develop a historical series like you have done. My question is twofold -- how do you conduct your research without getting overwhelmed with the tiny details and how do you plan your plots so they come together without being too 'easy'?
