Taylor asked Mark Lawrence:

Hi Mark... Female characters are somewhat harder to write then the males. How did you over come that so well? Did you have any inspiration for Brother Makin like Jorg and how much research did you do for your characters and setting?

Mark Lawrence I imagine it depends on the writer whether they find one gender easier to write than the other and which way round that preference might lie. I don't generally have answers for 'how did you' questions - I just wrote what popped into my head while typing. I know that's not particularly helpful :)

There was no particular inspiration for Makin, no. Of all my characters only Jorg and Jalan were consciously inspired by other characters.

As to research ... none. I have a well of trivia on which to draw, and I make stuff up. I'm always tempted to lie and claim to have spent years researching so that the reader feels they're getting more for their money. But the truth is, none.
