Sara
Sara asked Maggie Stiefvater:

When you initially developed the characters Isabel & Cole, were you inspired by anyone or any experiences from your personal life?

Maggie Stiefvater The short answer is yes.

The medium answer is: Isabel and Cole are both pretty terrible people in many ways, and I was a terrible person as a teen. Perhaps I shouldn't say "terrible." Perhaps I should say "difficult." Perhaps I should say "prickly." Perhaps I should say "looked nothing on the outside like I was on the inside and understood very little about what I needed out of life."

I am still a strange person, but I am now a strange, happy person, with a life full of strange, happy people — and I wanted to write a book showing how strange, terrible, difficult people could learn to live with each other, and — most impossibly — with themselves.
