Deeze asked Nick Wilgus:

I apologise if I'm asking this in the wrong way, but is there any reason you chose to write about deafness? You seem to write it as if from personal experience.

Nick Wilgus No particular reason. When I first started the Sugar Tree series, all I had was an image in my mind of a gay single dad and his deaf son, and I knew these two people had a story they wanted to tell. During the first draft of SHAKING THE SUGAR TREE, Noah was not only deaf but autistic and not very communicative. About halfway through the story, though, he put his foot down and insisted on being portrayed as a happy go lucky kid. I had to go back and rewrite all his scenes - and I discovered he was right.
