Sarah asked Emma Scott:

The main characters in your books are so different. How do you get an idea for a book/character? I guess this is the proverbial chicken vs. egg question- which comes first- a character nagging at you to tell his/her story, or does your storyline eventually develop into a character?

Emma Scott Good question! I think the premise comes first. An idea for a plot or a setting or a situation. Sometimes it's just a flash of dialogue or an image, and then it grows from there. The characters follow, usually the hero. I think about what kind of guy I want for my heroine, what he's like and what kind of need he fulfills for her. Then she comes next (this sounds way more linear than it actually occurs), and what need she fulfills for him. Once those basics are known, then they both start shouting to tell their story. As for how different they are, I try to vary it but I tend to stick to two things; artists (in some way) and good people. I like writing about good people. :)
