Raffaele Capasso
asked:
I'm at page 60 and this book is making my blood pressure rise. I thought it was one of those "common life of a common man" book like Carver's, Russel Bank's, Yates' or whoever. Truth is it's deadly boring. I rally can't relate with the character. Please tell me, is It just the beginning or will it stay the same till the end? Thanks

When I read the book about a year ago I also found it slow going for the first 100 pages or so, but around the midway point I became wrapped up in it to the point that I didn't want to put it down. You should stick with it: a few of the later chapters are, in a quiet way, among the most extraordinary set pieces in 20th century American fiction. It's one of the best novels I've read in the past several years.

I am 2/3 of the way though the book and I too think that it is the story of a common man, but aren't we (men and women) all? We live the life that we can, making decisions that face us and live with the consequences of those decisions. Some turn out well, some we would like to go back and change. I am in awe of the simple, story of Stoner. He is a man that has a issues that hold his back just as Lomax and Walker, but Stoner's are not visible. Keep reading. I think it is worth it.

I see you asked this question a year ago, but I so want you to have finished this book. There are passages that seem dreadfully long and others - more beautiful passages - that appear too short and minimalistic. I understand.
Trust me, read this book. Finish your reading if you haven't - for the last chapter of the book if nothing else. The beauty of this book and Stoner's contemplation of life is worth it.
