Goodreads asked Emily Barton:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Emily Barton Being a fiction writer is one of the last places where you can be a generalist. Or rather, you can become a specialist in any field of knowledge or human endeavor—or at least, enough of a specialist to write convincingly about that topic. You just have to dedicate yourself to research, ask the right questions. That's what I love most about writing—that I can study anything my imagination can encompass, and with luck and hard work, help readers to envision and experience it.
