the Goodreads Team asked K.J. Charles:

What's the most romantic line you've ever read?

K.J. Charles Definitely the end of Cotillion by Georgette Heyer. Kitty has been using the underestimated and utterly unheroic pink of the Ton Freddy to make handsome rake Jack jealous, getting into all sorts of scrapes in the process. Finally Jack proposes; Kitty turns him down; and Freddy speaks at last...

"You don't feel you could marry me instead? Got no brains, of course, and I ain't a handsome fellow like Jack, but I love you. Don't think I could ever love anyone else. Daresay it ain't any use telling you but--well, there it is!"

Freddy is appalled at 'romance-hero' behaviour. His qualifications as hero come down to unfailing courtesy, decency, and deep kindness. So this gloriously understated declaration carries as much emotion in the context of the character as the wildest excesses of Heathcliff...and Freddy does it *politely*.
