Goodreads asked R.A. Mathis:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

R.A. Mathis 1. Keep writing. It's the only way to get any better.

2. Keep learning. Find a mentor to help develop good writing and storytelling skills. For me, that was Jay Wurts. He is amazing.

3. Keep reading. Find out what you like about other authors' styles as well as what you don't. It is a part of developing your unique voice. Writing changes the way you read, watch, speak, and listen. You find that you suddenly have an internal editor who analyses everything you see and hear from movie dialogue to political speeches. Don't fight this. It's a good thing.

4. Accept criticism. We can't fix what we don't know is wrong. An outside opinion is the best way to reveal our blind spots.

5. Repeat.
