Birdie Reader asked Shannon Messenger:

What motivates you to reach your word count goals?

Shannon Messenger Deadlines. Contracts. Not to mention the pressure from readers, who are barely willing to wait a year for the next book and won't be happy with me if I have to stretch it out to two years.

But before I had that kind of pressure, I was motivated because I wanted to be an author, and it's kinda hard to be an author if you haven't finished writing a book. So I pushed myself to get to "the end" and then to revise revise revise because I knew I needed to make the draft as good as it could be if I wanted it to be published.

It also helps that there are lots of times when the words flow freely and I can't wait to find out what's going to happen next. Sometimes writing is WORK. But there are also a lot of times when it's FUN.
