Goodreads asked Daren M. Stottrup:

How do you get inspired to write?

Daren M. Stottrup Usually it's some little thing that sticks out in my head--something someone said, or some passing notion. "Oma Opal" came about because I woke up one morning with the phrase in my head: "My grandmother was a real gem of a lady." I started laughing when I imagined it literally.

Music also inspires me, be it the mood of a song or the specific words. "The Singing in the Forest" came about because of a Cake song, while "Through the Secret Places" was spurred on by the Smashing Pumpkins.
