Goodreads asked John Drake:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

John Drake My latest is 'Death in Londinium' a detective story in Roman London. The inspiration was a ferocious Roman law, the Senatus Consultum Silanianum, which decreed, that if any slave killed his/her master, then every other slave in the house, innocent or guilty, was put to death, which could mean hundreds of slaves in the household of a millionaire. The law was a safeguard for masters in a slave-owning culture, a ghastly cruelty, and a damn fine premise for a novel!
