Judith asked Katherine Howe:

Where did you get your inspiration for The House of Velvet and Fog? So well written - I couldn't put it down! Judith Plante

Katherine Howe Thank you so much for those kind words about House of Velvet and Glass, Judith. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. I'd been thinking about the 1910s for awhile, since it's a time period which looks a lot like ours, but which had a very different understanding of reality. I was also curious about the unseen ways in which these large-scale, turning point events (like Titanic's sinking) continue to echo in ways both seen and unseen. I wanted to write a story about a woman, Sibyl, who was raised to assume she would live in the 19th century, and who suddenly finds herself confronting living in the 20th. The 1910s saw such radical changes in culture, in immigration, gender politics, laws, and city life that I couldn't wait to explore it.
