How long does it take you to translate the experiences you have in real life, and on your travels, into a fictionalized story?

I never know how to answer this question. I think about books for a long time before I sit down to write them. So, is it the two years from the day I decide this is the one until I deliver it to my publisher? Is it the five to eight years that I’ve been thinking about the idea and maybe collecting little bits and pieces of research? Or is it my entire life, because I feel like I put everything I know—about life and relationships up to this point—in a book?

Lisa, I would like to thank you for such a wonderful story. As an adoptee who reunited with birth parents, I really appreciate how well you provided insight into each characters challenges and overall angst with an almost indescribably emotional and entrenching event. While all your books are wonderful, this one is truly special to me. I don't have a question, just a Thank You. :) ?

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was my very favorite of your novels. It was also the first one I read. My neighbor, who is Chinese American gave it to me and it opened up wonderful stories of his mother in China who refused to have her feet wrapped. You may history very approachable. Do you do most of your research online or do you travel to China and visit libraries and museums?
