That's a tough question. If I'm working on something for which I've already written a few chapters, I'll go back and read up to the point at which I'm blocked and move forward from there. If it’s something net new, I do my best to understand my character’s desires before I write. Other times, I’m just blocked and in the middle of the night, while I'm fast asleep, a nugget of inspiration wakes me up and sends me to my writing desk.
