Hello! Can this story be read as a stand-alone or do I need to read Prosperity first? Thanks a lot for your answer! PS: It's not that I don't want to read Prosperity, but as a non-native speaker, the vernacular has made it super hard to follow. I'll probably picked it up again soon. Especially now that I don't have a pregnancy brain anymore and that I fell in love with every single other book you've written.

By 'this' do you mean Phlogiston? Sorry, GR isn't being helpful. If so, yes, there's some very faint overlap here and there, and obviously it's set in the world, but you definitely don't have to have read Prosperity. There's also way less cant/dialect :) Liberty is more complicated because while only one of the stories follows directly on from Prosperity the others are kind of connected to it, and would probably make a lot more sense (and be more interesting) if you've read Prosperity.
Totally get what you're saying about the dialect. There'll be an audiobook released this year so that might make it more accessible to non-native speakers and people who don't enjoy dialect :)

I LOVE all your spires books!!and while i wait for the next spires book, i'm going to start reading the prosperity series because i am addicted to your writing.. :) English is not my first language, but i find your writing to be so incredibly wonderful. One of my favorite sentence in your book is "...molested vigorously in a churchyard":)So here comes my question:will there be another spires book released in 2016?

I'm reading For Real right now and loving it. Fantastic writing, fascinating characters. I have to ask: when Toby says "Do you think because I’m poor and little and nineteen, I don't know what I want?", was that a Jane Eyre reference? Perhaps it's my Toby Stephens fanship showing, but I immediately also heard the echo of “Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little, I am soulless and heartless?"
