Stephanie asked Chris Bohjalian:

I attended your author event at the St Louis County Library last night and really enjoyed your talk. You mentioned that you don't know where the characters will take you when you write a book. Do you ever start to root for a character as he/she develops and then have a difficult time letting "bad" things happen to them?

Chris Bohjalian What a wonderful question! I have never been asked that.

Yes. I can think two times that has happened -- and I can recall what I did.

One time was in "The Sandcastle Girls." I was worried that something terrible was going to befall 8-year-old Hatoun. My solution? I gave her some friends who could be -- forgive me -- collateral damage in service of the story.

Another time was in "The Guest Room." But I'll let you see how I solved that one as you turn the pages.

Thanks, Stephanie!
