I've almost finished Prince of Thorns. I'm really enjoying it. Nice to have the main character not be your stereotypical hero. I've started picking up on real world references. I take it this is set on Earth, I assume in the middle ages but maybe not one place specifically. Sort of an alternate history type setting. Was this always the plan or did you consider creating your own world for the setting?

Hi Bryant, good to hear you're enjoying the story.
I don't plan my books, so there was no 'always', both story and setting develop as I write.
You have some surprises ahead but you might prefer that certain realizations arrive in their own course.
You could look at the maps for the later books - a mild spoiler:

Or note that many of the real world references post-date the middle ages.
