I'd recommend "Pillars of the Earth", "World Without End", and "A Column of Fire" which are all part of the Kingsbridge Trilogy by Ken Follett if you are looking for some great historical fiction set in the Middle Ages. He also wrote a prequel to the Trilogy recently, "The Evening & The Morning", but I haven't read that one yet (on my bookshelf though!).
I'd also recommend 'Shogun' by James Clavell. It is a very different setting being historical fiction set in early 17th century Japan, but it has a similar feel to it in my opinon.
I liked all 4 of these books wat more than 'The Walking Drum' which I didn't particularly love, but I know that I am in the minority on that opinion.
