The classic ones are Stephen King and Lovecraft, but I would recommend Poppy Z. Brite (the first ones like Lost Souls, a story with vampires, or Exquisite Corpse, a romance between a cannibal and a necrophiliac), she's a true queen of splatterpunk.
For the gifts (for other readers), there's a lot of goodies about Hellraiser (the first movie was made by Clive Barker so it's okay about canon ;) ), my step-dad had the puzzle box and a Pinhead figure and they were quite good!

This is an old question but I feel like the other answers are way off. Depends on what they get out of Barker really. If it's just broad horror, then sure the other authors listed work just fine. But he's the original splatterpunk author, and really books under that name should be more likely compared to him. Edward Lee, Brian Keene and the like have much more in common with Barker than Stephen King.

In a book I read, and I forget the author's name, I am sorry to say, he listed the first/foremost horror writers that influenced him. They are Richard Matheson, Malcolm McDowell, William F. Nolan, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, Peter Straub, Bari Wood, Robert R. McCammon, John Farris, Shirley Jackson, T.M. Wright, Richard Laymon.Flannery O'Connor, Thomas Tessier.
