My main advice is to write because you love it and not for sales. Learn your craft. Read On Writing by Stephen King. Read everything you can in your genre. Pick up on the things that you enjoy in a story and the things you don't. Don't publish a book until it has been properly edited and proofed. Pay a professional to design your cover.
