From the women and men of my childhood, growing up in Los Alamos, New Mexico. My parents and neighbors were physicists and chemists, mathematicians and biologists. I watched the women of my mother's generation struggle to use their fine minds for more than the wholly appropriate but often inadequately satisfying avocation of child-rearing. I also knew of my own, personal longing for a career other than the one I had, and of my husband's deathbed regrets about all he felt he was leaving untried, unrealized.

Elizabeth, this is not a question, but a chance to tell you how much I loved this book. The character of Meridian will stay with me for a long time, I think. Such a full life, so much learned, such sweetness and pain. And now that I read a little bit about your own life and that of your parents, it is all the more meaningful.
