What is the point made with the book's ending? is it saying that Stefano, the husband, sold the shoes to Marcello and made some business deal with him? that Lila did not escape the Solara family as she thought by marrying Stefano?

She thought that, because Stefano was a nice guy who didn't make her feel like he was buying her from her family, that he was different from Marcello. The shoes prove not only that Stefano and Marcello are ultimately cut from the same cloth (they wear the same shoe size after all) but that Stefano's intentions toward Lila aren't that different from what Marcello's were. Also, there's no escaping the neighborhood without a struggle.(less)
