Jen asked Erica Bauermeister:

I was wondering if you had any particular inspiration for the character of Antonia (who is my favorite) or her relationship with Ian (my favorite couple)? Their stories were my favorite part of the book and I let out an actual squeal of delight when I realized they were going to get together. :)

Erica Bauermeister I'm so happy you like Antonia and Ian -- I had great fun creating them. None of my characters are based on anyone I know, but in Antonia's case, she was inspired both by my experience of moving back to the United States after living in Italy, and by the experience of watching an Italian friend move to this country. Everything seemed so different (my friend actually did drink half and half for a while, thinking it was milk). Antonia's personality, however, is all her own. I loved the idea of pairing her up with Ian, who reminds me of many of the software engineering types I know in Seattle. In many ways, their relationship makes me think of what happens to many Americans when they visit Italy...
