Sasha asked John Gwynne:

I know they say not to judge a book by its cover but the reason I first picked up Malice was because of the beautiful simplicity of the cover. Sometimes I find books where the best part turns out to be the cover, so to find a series such as yours where the exquisite cover matches the magic lying between the pages is refreshing. How/where did the inspiration for the covers come from?

John Gwynne Hi Sasha,

I'm so pleased you like the cover-art to Malice, and thank-you for the kind words about the tale inside.

As far as the cover goes, I can't take the credit. My publishers, Tor UK, came up with the idea, though we did have a lot of back and forth conversations before the final version was reached. Fantasy covers tend to swing between a hooded man/figure, and an item, like a sword or crown. I did campaign for the sword to look/feel historical and useable, rather than a more out-there fantasy-type weapon.

I love the covers, and have found an old-school blacksmith who can make the sword on Malice's cover. I'm pretty excited about that! I'll post photos when it happens.

I hope that helps.

Best,

John
