Debbie At the time of the setting of this book, it was truly dangerous in some places for black children to be in areas where whites were without their paren…moreAt the time of the setting of this book, it was truly dangerous in some places for black children to be in areas where whites were without their parents. For whites, it was considered not proper to associate with "their lessers" except when the "lesser" person worked for them. It's great that in many places that's changing, but there is still a long way to go. That's a really good question.(less)
