how long does it take to research a new location? i imagine you actually have to live in a new place to get a good feel for the style and attitude of a site.

I guess it depends on the place. It definitely helps if you've been to the place. I've been to both Suicide Forest and The Catacombs, and although I still had to do a bunch of research, just having a physical idea of it in your head is indeed a huge help. So to answer your question... I don't really know actually. I don't do that much research up front. I just sort of research whatever needs to be researched in the particular scene I'm working on.
