I'm currently reading your book "Shadow on the Crown" and I'm really enjoying it. What inspired you to write about this period of history? Is there an expected publication date for book 3 yet?
Patricia Bracewell
Hello Meri,
Thank you for your interest in my novels and in Emma of Normandy. My inspiration for writing about this period of history was Emma herself. I stumbled across her name on the internet, way back in the 1990's. I had never heard of her, despite having taken a course in English history at university, and I was intrigued to learn that there had been a woman who had been wed to 2 different kings of England. My preliminary research led me to Aethelred's reign, the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings, and Emma's own family history. I really wanted to explore what Emma's first marriage might have been like - for her - and how she might have dealt with the people and the events of Aethelred's reign, as well as how she handled the turmoil that would eventually lead to her second marriage. As for Book 3, I am working on it, but we have no publication date yet.

I'm an aspiring writer, but I'm dealing with two things: I get discouraged every single day because 96% of manuscripts are rejected, and I haven't had an idea for years, literally. There's too many people wanting to be writers, and knowing there's so much competition just kills me a little every day. When I get motivated, immediatly something appears about the industry that kills it. Any tips on how to deal with this?

Hi Patricia! I am just starting The Price of Blood, and you have me hooked! Looking ahead, I was surprised to find that the 3rd book isn't available yet. As there are no date on the comments here, I cannot tell when you last responded to the questions about when the 3rd book may be available, and I'm sorry to ask you yet again, but is there a rough estimate of when PERILOUS TIDES may become available? Thank you!

As my resident Viking expert, which I know has nothing to do with Emma, I have a question. A friend of mine recommended "The Long Ships" by Frans Bengtsson with a lovely introduction by Michael Chabon. The translator wrote about the great Ragnar Hairy Breeks. Is this our Ragnar from the Vikings TV show? What is hairy breeks? He also called Ragnar's sons terrible. Have you read this book? Thanks so much.
