The Odyssey as a story should be introduced early to students, since the Wandering Hero motif is the basis of so much literature. I introduce it in 7th grade, though I use Rosemary Sutcliffe's "The Wanderings of Odysseus" by Rosemary Sutcliffe as an entry text, after which we try some of the real text (at least in English).
If you want to just jump into the text I'd wait until 9th grade. By then they are better able to handle the poetic text and the non-chronological telling of the first part of the story.
