I think he is gay because he is talking about him like he would be fallen in love him. If you read the parts when he is talking about Brandon.
Maybe he doesn't know it at this moment or isn't sure.
But i think if he would know it he would't show it only because how he would be afraid how Brandon and his other friends would think about this.

I think he may be but yet he may not be because he was talking like they was best friends for a long time until his death in which i think they was just really close and good friend.
