Boroson doesn't gloss over the less pretty elements of life in the late 19th century west, and gambling, prostitution, drug use, and anti-Chinese racism are basic, accepted parts of the setting. I'd wait to hand this one over until the young person in question was 14-15-16 or so, and already starting to notice similar problematic aspects of life.(less)
