Shanti asked Lauren James:

Hi Lauren, I just thought that I would tell you that I liked the quote from the Next Together "I think there are no true heroes. Only people who ignore their survival instincts long enough to do something incredibly foolhardy" so much that I convinced my English teacher to let me write an essay about it :) What inspires you to write about heroes, true or foolish or not in your novel ?

Lauren James I'm so touched that you're writing an essay based on my book, thank you for letting me know!

I never set out to write about heroes, actually. I wanted to write about ordinary people, who make the right choices in a difficult situation. I wanted to show that real heroics can often just be a case of being in the right place at the right time - a matter of chance. Following your heart can often be the right thing to do, even if it doesn't feel heroic at the time.
