Div asked David Wong:

At any point during the writing of Futuristic Violence, did you ever think "I'm writing a girl, what do girls think about?" In other words, did Zoey's being a girl make you ever stumble in the writing process?

David Wong Well all characters are difficult, because they're all different from me. The David Wong from the JDATE books doesn't share any of my values, and I wouldn't react remotely the same way in a situation that he does. So whether I'm writing him or Zoey or John or a talking dog, it's always about trying to understand what that person wants, how they think, what they're afraid of, etc. Zoey being female helps inform that but so does the fact that she lives in a trailer park, is getting over a long-term relationship, has no career prospects, etc.

That's all part of it, and all of that is different from my own life - it's always the same process of trying to understand why people are the way they are, whether they're real or fictional. But for instance it was easier for me to write Zoey than Molech, because even though he's a dude, my thought process are closer to her's than his.
