At any point during the writing of Futuristic Violence, did you ever think "I'm writing a girl, what do girls think about?" In other words, did Zoey's being a girl make you ever stumble in the writing process?
David Wong
Well all characters are difficult, because they're all different from me. The David Wong from the JDATE books doesn't share any of my values, and I wouldn't react remotely the same way in a situation that he does. So whether I'm writing him or Zoey or John or a talking dog, it's always about trying to understand what that person wants, how they think, what they're afraid of, etc. Zoey being female helps inform that but so does the fact that she lives in a trailer park, is getting over a long-term relationship, has no career prospects, etc.
That's all part of it, and all of that is different from my own life - it's always the same process of trying to understand why people are the way they are, whether they're real or fictional. But for instance it was easier for me to write Zoey than Molech, because even though he's a dude, my thought process are closer to her's than his.

I noticed that the purchasing power of a dollar in FVaFS is approximately equal to the purchasing power of a dollar today. Since inflation tends to drive up prices over time, and the book is set in the future, one would expect a difference. Was this a deliberate choice? Was it just for the sake of minimizing confusion?

I have kind of a random question, are you by chance visiting Squaw Valley this holiday week? I work at a resort here and there is a David Wong schedule to check in. Since I am a fan I was wondering if that was one and the same as yourself and maybe I can be ready for an autograph? I am a huge fan of all your works so it would be a very awesome holiday treat :)

I just finished "Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits", and I was wondering if at some point in the outline/draft process, Andre and Molech were supposed to be related in some way? I had that idea stuck in my head because both of them use the word "daddy" to describe fathers (Andre for Zoey's, Molech for his). Was their use of "daddy" an intentional red herring or just coincidence? The book was great, by the way.
