It is tied to Umbrella Summer, yes. I haven't read Umbrella Summer, but just read the description of it, and it mentions Annie and Jared. Jared is the boy that died, and Trent, the main character in Lost in the Sun is the boy who feels Jared's death is his fault. Annie is Jared's younger sister, who is best friends with Trent's younger brother, Doug. So yes, they are connected.
