But it's mostly just setup and feeling out feelings for relationships, without any sort of "I love you!" moments.

The romantic subplot plays into character tension quite a bit. There is no coupling/boyfriend-girlfriend dynamic. It feels like it'll get there in the next book, though. The romantic undertones are definitely there.(less)
