A Goodreads user asked Darren Shan:

How did you feel when you killed Kurda? I remember crying. He was one of my favorite vampires in the whole series. And what about Darren? How could you make yourself kill him off? He was soo amazing! - BTW; I loved the conclusion to the series either way, thank you for your work.

Darren Shan I don't really feel sad when I kill off my characters, because the deaths always serve the purpose of the story and I know they are coming in advance. I approach my writing based on something I said in the prologue to Cirque Du Freak: "In real life, bad things happen, evil sometimes wins, good guys sometimes die." I think, if you create a plot full of incredible danger, it's only natural that some of your cast will die along the way, and I think it's cheating if you protect your favourite characters. I know it's painful for readers, but we can't truly appreciate the good things in life unless we've also experienced the bad.
